"Rain Walkers", by Pennie Anderson

Pennie Anderson of Roanoke, VA (and a former 25 year resident of Abingdon) became interested in art as a child watching her mother colorize black and white portraits in oils. After Pennie's eyesight would not allow her to continue to do the intricate needlework she enjoyed, she began painting. She studied art history at Virginia Intermont College and has taken classes and workshops under Suzanne Stryk, John Sauers, the late Tedd Blevins, Shawn Crookshank, and D.R. Mullins. She works mainly in acrylics but also in gouache, watercolors, tempera, and mixed media. While her favorite subject is cats, she also enjoys painting impressionist landscapes. The beauty of Mother Nature - the colors, the shapes, textures, etc.- keeps her artistic passion going. Pennie is also very influenced by the artwork of others, and considers the late Landon Woody to be a major influence on her work. She has previously participated in exhibits at the Starving Artist Café, William King Regional Arts Center Mistletoe Market, Arts Depot (all of Abingdon), and Jefferson Center in Roanoke, VA. She maintains membership in the Depot Artists Association and the Jefferson Center. Pennie is currently employed as the communications manager for the Roanoke Regional Chamber of Commerce.

Sheryl Daniels of Johnson City, TN, Says that "A love of the beauty of God’s creation and a desire to interpret that beauty through drawing and painting have been major factors in my life since childhood". She creates her artwork using the mediums of watercolor and pastels. Sheryl studied art throughout middle school, high school, and at the University of Memphis. With a constant desire to learn more, she has continued her art education by taking workshops and classes from locally and nationally known artists such as Marcia Leonard, Don Andrews, Alan Flattman, Janet Walsh, Carol Cooper, Mary Todd Beam, Jo Anne Anderson, Greg Biolchini, Suzanne Winton, and Paul DeMarrais. She hopes that her artwork will bring enjoyment and an uplifted spirit to all.

Connie Green

Connie Green of Bristol, TN has always considered art to be an integral part of her life. Her mother and grandfather were both "Sunday" painters and now she is a "Wednesday Painter", referring to the group she paints with each week. She was born Richmond and was encouraged to draw and paint from an early age. Connie took art classes in junior high and high school and received an art scholarship to Mary Baldwin College in Staunton, Virginia. Later in her life, when her children were away from home so she studied at the University of Tennessee receiving a degree in studio art and ornamental horticulture at age 60. Her college work introduced her to all fields of art and art history and encouraged my love of gardening. She has also studied under the late Tedd Blevins, Ernestine Blanton, Alex Powers. Christopher Shank, Ellen Elmes, Brian Atyeo and Harry Thompson. In painting, watercolor remains her main area of interest with secondary work in pastels. Connie paints what she loves: the mountains, streams and wildflowers of our area, the Chesapeake Bay where she spends time in the summer, and an occasional pastel portrait. She has previously exhibited in the Virginia Highlands Festival Juried Art show, the Arts Depot and received "Best in Show" in a Bristol Art Guild/ Bristol Herald Courier exhibit. Most of her painting now is with the Wednesday Morning Painters at the Arts Depot whom she says "have been a positive, cheerful group to work with, willing to critique and offer suggestions to better my work."

Mary Harrington of Abingdon, VA is presenting her photographs, concentrating on scenes around the Arts Depot that you might not normally see. Having always enjoyed photography, Mary decided to pursue it more vigorously after she retired from teaching mathematics in Fauquier County, VA. She likes to zoom in on her subject to show the details with emphasis on the form, line, color, or mood. Combining career and hobby, one of her photographs was featured on the cover of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Journal. Mary taught for a short while at Virginia Intermont College and that experience created a love of the mountains that led her to retire to this area.
